When in pain… relying on stretches or exercises for musicians to get lasting relief may not be the answer.
Q: Can stretches and exercises solve music-related pain?
A: The simple answer is no, because stretches and exercises won't address the root cause of your pain.
At best, they provide temporary relief or prevent further injury, but in some cases, they can even make you more vulnerable to harm.
But why? Isn't it common knowledge that stretching or exercising before playing is essential?
The truth is, they aren't as crucial as people think.
AND… the big, overlooked truth that most musicians and health professionals miss is this:
The root cause of physical pain or discomfort is rarely just physical. 🦶💪🦵
Since the mind and body are intricately connected, pain always involves a mental and emotional component. The real clues to solving your pain lie in observing how you think and tweaking your approach to your daily activities and music-making.
It's essential to examine how your physical pain relates to:
🔍 How you think and move while lifting, holding, or playing your instrument
🔍 Performance anxiety and ineffective practice techniques
🔍 Negative, anxious, and self-critical thoughts
🔍 The way you walk, talk, or drive
🔍 Your interactions with your conductor, colleagues, students, and family
To truly resolve your pain, you need to investigate these areas and develop a system to recognize how your responses create stress, tension, and discomfort in your body.
Once you understand how everything is interconnected, you can break the pain cycle by using your mind in a new way, giving you genuine control over your experience.
❌ The problem with relying on stretches and exercises for musicians — even if they offer temporary relief — is that you're still approaching your music-making with the same mental patterns and emotions that are contributing to your pain.
Not only that, but your performance will never reach its FULL potential if your energy is being dispersed by masking deeper, unresolved issues.
The same stress and muscle tension causing your pain will also hold you back from achieving your most expressive, technically brilliant, and artistically fulfilling performance.
If you experience discomfort on any level, it's a sign your music is being compromised, and you're not realizing your full artistic potential.
So, if you feel I'm on target 🎯 and sense there's more to your discomfort than what stretches or exercises can fix, message me to learn how The Art of Freedom® Method can help you get to the ROOT of your pain or discomfort and unlock your potential as a musician.
