🎻 I’ve performed with dozens of orchestras and ensembles and I’ve spoken and worked with hundreds of musicians—colleagues, students, and friends. Again and again, I’ve seen the same doubts show up in nearly everyone. Most musicians hide them, even from themselves, because it’s painful to admit that you’re not fully satisfied with your life or your music, and that you wish things were different.

But those thoughts arise for a reason. They gently remind you not to settle or get stuck—they signal that there is more waiting for you: more fulfillment, more artistry, more joy. These uncomfortable feelings are often invitations for positive change. As unsettling as they may be, facing your challenges honestly is healthy—and you’re reading this book because a part of you already knows that.🌿

The truth is that most musicians are not living anywhere near their full artistic potential. And no matter where you are in life or how skilled you are, there is always room to grow. Pablo Casals, the great Spanish cellist, famously answered—at sixty-seven, again at eighty, and even later—why he still practiced every day: “Because I think I’m making progress!”

So when your “Doubt Monsters” whisper that you’re not improving fast enough or that your life isn’t unfolding as you hoped, remember: it’s not because something is wrong with you. It’s not a sign that you’re lazy, untalented, unlucky, or incapable.

That sense of lack simply comes from being disconnected from your true purpose—and from not yet knowing how to fully enjoy yourself or your music. The beautiful news is that you can begin again at any moment. You can learn new ways of being, right now. ✨

There’s a familiar saying that “happiness is a choice,” and while that can feel unrealistic at times, I do believe it’s true. When I begin to doubt this, I think of Viktor Frankl—the Austrian psychologist who founded the “third school” of Viennese psychotherapy after Freud and Adler. His ideas weren’t formed in comfort, but in the unimaginable suffering of a concentration camp.

Frankl endured immense loss: the forced abortion of his child, the death of his father in the camps, deportation to Auschwitz with his wife and mother, the destruction of his manuscript, typhoid fever, and the struggle to stay alive by reconstructing his work on scraps of paper. ✍️

Through disciplined attention to his thoughts, he managed to uplift not only his own spirit but also the spirits of those around him. He demonstrated that—even in the darkest circumstances—meaning, dignity, and inner freedom remain possible. (If you haven’t yet read Man’s Search for Meaning, it’s deeply inspiring.)

His story teaches us this: if you want to be happy, you must prioritize happiness. It must be practiced. Happiness isn’t only a choice—it’s a skill. And intentional, conscious living is the foundation of that skill. When you learn to live on purpose, you open the door to more joy, more connection, and more meaningful success.
