First of all, as I was teaching, I was becoming more and more aware of how important it is to have a clear intention. To know what you want. So that you can choose to bring more of yourself towards that goal, and have less of a sense of inner conflict.
All too often, we experience inner conflict because part of us wants to do something while another part of us wants to do something else. Part of us wants to be here, while part of us wants to be somewhere else. This “split” creates a war inside of us, as part of our body pulls us one way while another part pulls us in another direction.
The mind and body are not separate, so when this happens we are pulling ourselves apart without actually being able to do that. This compromises our health, our functioning, and our effectiveness. There was even a study done recently that showed how we are more likely to be pulled forward – off-balance – when we’re thinking about the future; more likely to be pulled backwards – off-balance – when we’re thinking about the past.
The important question is, “What do you want?”
What do you desire? What is your intention? Where do you want to be right now?
These can be challenging questions, and “I don’t know” is a perfectly good answer.
But the really important insight that surprised me came when I realized that OF COURSE, we actually DO want to be doing what we’re doing / being where we are … because we ARE doing it, and we ARE where we are. If there were no part of you wanting it, you would be elsewhere, doing something else!
Do you see? We’re usually just lacking this awareness as we go around mindlessly with only minimal consciousness of what is actually in the present moment. And we’re all too often aware of the part of us that wants something that is not here now, in this present moment.
How do you feel when you think, “I don’t want to be here; I don’t want to do this,” and “I have to do this; I have to be here now” ??
Contrast that with how you feel when you think, “I want to be here, I want to do this right now, I am free to choose” whatever it is that you’re doing, wherever you are right now.
Can you realize that you have what you want already? You are here, doing what you want to be doing in this moment. Focus on THAT, instead of the part of you that might want something else, somewhere else, and you will start to feel more satisfied, more content…more at peace, less at war with yourself and the outside world that you believe is “forcing” you to do things you don’t want to do.
Nobody can EVER force you to do what you don’t want to do – really, truly. It just feels like it. Whatever you are doing, it’s because YOU are choosing to do it, because some part of you actually wants that.
So why not enjoy the fact that you’re doing exactly what you want to do right now? Can you get in touch with that? Can you marvel at that? Can you see how you can start to turn this realization to your advantage once you decide to get really clear about your intentions and what you really want?
You can learn how to increase your awareness of the present moment, while directing yourself into a future of your choice, according to your design. I think this is pretty amazing. Don’t you?
