You’ve been studying, practicing, performing – and maybe even teaching – the violin for many years. So, shouldn’t you be able to play without all that extra tension by now?!?
➡️ After all, you KNOW your shoulders shouldn’t be tense, and your jaw shouldn’t have a death-grip on your instrument.
➡️ You KNOW your bow-arm, elbow and wrist need to be free and flexible in order to make smooth bow changes and project a lush, gorgeous sound.
➡️ And you KNOW your back shouldn’t hurt, and your left arm shouldn’t feel so stiff and tired after several hours of rehearsing!
So why… after spending so much time and energy working on these things and trying to relax, do you STILL feel like you can’t play as freely as you want…with a free head and neck, free arms, and fingers that can fly around the fingerboard with effortless ease?
You know there’s too much tension in your body when you play. But, even though you try to let it go, nothing you do seems to work. 😭
As soon as you relax one body part, another part tenses up… or the same one tenses up again just a few minutes later. Week after week, the tension hangs around, lurking just under the surface, showing up when you most need to be relaxed.
Sometimes, the tension seems related to some performance anxiety; at other times, it seems related to stress in other areas of your life.
Things just generally feel out of balance, and you know that something must be done!
Maybe you’ve tried some of the following already:
- Meditation
- Yoga, or breathing exercises
- Massage
- Exercise
Even though all of these feel good while you’re doing them, you suspect that you’re not making much progress. The same old tension keeps on coming back when you play.
It’s really frustrating and demoralizing, and it feels especially hopeless when the tension gets in the way of your technique, causes pain, and you can’t do anything about it. 😖
💥 What you need to realize is that tension when you play your instrument is not just about tension in parts of your body; it’s about how you approach every aspect of your life. 💥
The mind-body-self that you bring to your violin is the same “you” that you bring to everything you do.
🚩 If you’re tense when you do the dishes, you’re tense when you play the violin.
🚩 If you’re tense when you’re paying bills, you’re tense when you play the violin.
🚩 If you’re tense when you’re having a conflict with a friend, you’re tense when you play the violin.
The shoulder, jaw, or arm tension you experience when you play is NOT about your shoulder, jaw, or arm! It’s about the tension in your WHOLE system – which just happens to be showing up in your shoulder, jaw, or arm.
Violin teachers rarely usually understand this, which is why you were probably told over and over, “Relax your shoulder!” “Relax your bow arm!” “Relax your wrist!” “Relax your jaw!”
It’s NOT about your body parts. It’s about YOU – about how you think, feel, and move through life.
🌠 This is great news!!!! 🌠
It’s great news because it means that you can resolve ALL of your violin tension issues – everything from physical pain to technical limitations to performance anxiety – by learning just a few key skills:
(1) how to instantly let go of the tension in your whole mind-body system, all at once;
(2) how to move your body with this relaxed ease;
(3) how to bring this freedom of movement to your violin;
(4) how to renew this ease while you’re actually playing.
This may seem difficult, but it’s not. In fact, it is extremely simple, because moving this way is natural. It’s how the mind-body system is designed! It’s so simple that everybody misses it!
🌈 Imagine what a difference it could make in your musical life to know that you have the tools to let go of tension, heal from injury, relieve pain, improve your technique… and feel calm, confident, and in control on stage!
All of this is totally achievable, when you have a clear, step-by-step process to teach you the mind-body skills you need.
This is exactly what I teach my students in The Musician’s Advantage Jumpstart.
TMA Jumpstart is my powerful 30-day introductory program for musicians who are ready to finally let go of the excess tension that keeps getting in the way of their performance, so they can feel better in every way and make better music with ease.
