A lot of my students are highly skilled musicians, but they STILL feel like they’re not good enough. Even after many years of study, countless hours of practice, and maybe even landing some pretty good gigs and playing with other good musicians, they’re often frustrated with their own performance – and they'd love to be getting even BETTER gigs and fully enjoying themselves onstage!
They know their technique could be better and they could be more musically expressive, but they just aren't able to call upon what they know they've got inside when they're under the spotlight, and they just can’t seem to break through to the next level of artistic success.
So they keep practicing, striving, working hard… hoping that one day things will change and they’ll be able to play with wild abandon, ease, grace, and masterful artistry – onstage or anywhere.
Year after year.
So, what’s getting in the way for these clearly talented musicians? What's holding them back?
It’s not that they need to spend more time practicing, working on those stubborn technical problems. And it’s not that they have gaps in their musical understanding, or that they need some better teachings from better teachers.
The truth is, most professionals already know how to play their instruments plenty well enough, and they don’t need more insights into the specifics of their technique. They just need to learn how to infuse what they already know with effortless EASE and full-bodied JOY instead of negative thinking that makes them feel SMALL.
What’s missing is something much deeper, and more systemic.
What’s missing is a holistic awareness of something ineffable, intangible, subtle… a special something that can be tapped into, which we can call “ease” or “flow”.
There's a hidden treasure inside of each of us that is longing to be known, but we keep it, mistaking it for something else… looking in all the wrong places.
It certainly is a subtle “something” – but it’s also something very REAL, and most people are unfortunately quite unaware of its presence.
That lack of awareness is the key culprit in the phenomenon of inconsistent performance… and it's something that female musicians are REALLY good at blocking.
Why? Hint: because it can actually feel TOO good and we've been conditioned over lifetimes as women not to let ourselves feel too good – that's just not safe. It's OK to “be good” and “do good”… but there's still a big unconscious taboo around FEELING good with your whole body, mind, emotions, and creative spirit.
The result onstage is that some days you’ve “got it”, and everything works and it DOES feel amazing; but other days you’ve “lost it”. You miss notes, play out of tune, get nervous, shake, worry about what other people are thinking about your playing… and you have NO IDEA why things are going so badly and you have no clue what to do about it for next time.
When your playing is inconsistent and you feel like you don’t have control over yourself to the extent necessary to offer a stellar, moving performance to your audience, it’s easy for your self-confidence to suffer.
And when that happens, what do you do? You try harder. You work harder. You scramble to make more time to practice – even though you NEVER have enough time because you have WAY too many responsibilities to juggle in your life as it is!
But all that intensity just increases your overall tension and makes you feel worse when you can't do enough of what you think is necessary… which makes it even HARDER to be aware of the subtle easing within you – the JOYFUL FLOW – the magical artistic Loving Creative Muse within you – that makes things actually work FOR you – “on demand”, as it were.
However, being able to access the ever-elusive ease/flow and relaxed confidence hidden inside of you IS totally possible, when you have the right training for this highly specific skill that nobody has ever taught you.
You CAN harness your thoughts and use your mind to help you; and you CAN free yourself and your music from the tension that gives you a false sense of security, but blocks you from free-flow expression.
This is a SKILL!!
A skill that a few lucky few are born with (“she’s a natural”, they say), but usually don't know how to talk about or teach – or even replicate at times.
This is a skill that can be LEARNED.
The surprising thing is – it’s not difficult to learn!! In fact, my students begin to have a first delightful glimpse of what’s possible for them on Day 1 of any program they take with me.
Once their eyes and hearts are opened to the possibility of confidently accessing whole-self ease and relaxation, it’s just a matter of having a system in place to gradually increase the experience of this easing over time, learning a step-by-step process for applying it to your instrument, and… just a little bit of daily Self-Ease PRACTICE.
This kind of practice is simple – not like the way you’re probably used to practicing your instrument. Most of us turn artistic practice into something endlessly complicated.
But practicing the skill of increasing your awareness of ease is EASY… and makes everything you do EASIER – including your musical practice!
In fact, if you want to experience ease onstage, that’s exactly what you need to be practicing at home: experiencing ease in everything you do!
Once you know exactly how to access this relaxed confidence with ease and flow, and you know exactly how to practice it for yourself (which is what I teach in detail in my Level 1 self-study course), wondrous things begin to happen:
💎 Tension begins to loosen up and you begin to relax
💎 You start to feel more confident, because you can trust a process that’s already working
💎 Physical pain and discomfort begins to dissolve, and it bothers you less
💎 You start to feel more comfortable in your own skin
💎 Your relationships start improving as you become less reactive and you start attracting higher-quality relationships and gigs
💎 Your approach to your instrument and music-making lightens up and gets easier
…and you even find your mood improving as you become HAPPIER! 🙂
I’ve had many students tell me that deciding to work with me is one of the best things they’ve ever done – and it keeps getting better and better!
Some comments from my clients:
One of my students, Terry, told me she LOVES performing now because every performance is an experiment – a surprising adventure – where success is guaranteed; whereas, before she always felt apprehensive, worried about messing up, and she felt like an imposter.
Terry is a professional, and she was talking about performing onstage, in front of an audience. But this process works for amateurs (even beginners!), too. In fact, I wish I’d known how to consistently and consciously tap into ease-flow when I was a kid. It would have made my practice sessions so much easier, productive, and more fun!
If you ever struggle with feeling like your progress is slow, or you’re not fulfilling your artistic potential as a musician, you need to learn the skill of tapping into ease-flow at will.
It will change everything for you.
A recent student, Julia, wrote, “Your course was a source of inspiration for me! It was like a treasure chest where I could discover a lot of valuable information and exercises. At my starting point at the time (I was suffering from a frozen shoulder), it gave me hope for “the time after” and the confidence that I could reach the point where I could enjoy playing the violin again. Now, some months later and during the thawing process of my shoulder, I feel that the joy of playing is returning and that my system is renewing. There are still many problems to solve, but I see my possibilities rather than my limitations. Thank you for that!”
