When your bow starts shaking mid-performance, your first instinct is probably to grip tighter and focus on your hands.

Or maybe you try deep breathing or other surface-level solutions that only partially work – or don't work at all. When these approaches backfire, they cause you to feel even more out of control, creating a vicious cycle that just makes the shaking worse.

Here's the hidden root cause most people miss: performance anxiety isn't about the performance itself—it's actually about what you're afraid of receiving.

You're worried about criticism, negative feedback, judgment—and the emotional pain that follows.

This creates a paradox. You're so focused on avoiding negative reception and resulting emotional pain that you shut down your ability to receive anything at all.

When you're not receiving, you miss the good energy and positive support that's actually available to you because you're so focused on DOING something to feel better and play better.

The solution? Shift into what I call “Receiver Mode”—learning to access a receptive flow state, especially when it matters most.

For example: when you're practicing alone, open up to receiving the vibrations of your instrument moving through your body.

Receive the beauty in your practice space, the air supporting your life, the encouragement around you, and the rich intricacies of the music itself.

When anxiety tries to shut you down to protect you from perceived danger, you're automatically also blocking out the nourishing good stuff and preventing yourself from feeling positive emotions like gratitude and joy.

Here's how: I teach my students specific “Awareness Etudes” and daily practices that train your nervous system to stay open to receiving—not just positive thinking, but actual techniques that rewire how you respond to performance pressure.

The next time you think about being nervous, instead of focusing on what might go wrong, ask yourself: “What good energy is available for me to receive right now?”

Get curious—become innocent and trusting like a child—and your whole system will naturally soften and open as you recognize that you're more likely to be safe when you're experiencing and exuding positive energy.

Performance anxiety dissolves when you realize goodness is available everywhere, and you become willing to receive whatever comes with curiosity and joy.

You can't feel truly grateful and enjoy yourself if you're not actually receiving the gifts that are already present.

The problem isn't in your shaking hands—it's in your willingness to receive and process whatever comes your way with acceptance and enthusiasm rather than fear.

This is a learnable skill, and it's radically important if you want to enjoy your music – and your life – on a much higher level than what you're used to. This isn't about positive thinking or just changing your mindset—it's about specific techniques that train your nervous system to stay open and receptive, even under pressure.
