In one of my online classes for professional string players a few days ago, we had a powerful discussion about something that affects SO many musicians.

We discussed the belief that a critical mindset that seeks out mistakes and what needs to be corrected, while implicitly or explicitly demanding perfection of ourselves, is necessary to make us better players

What we discovered is that the opposite is actually true.

One member, a cellist, shared how his intense focus on flawless results and self-criticism when mistakes happened was creating physical tension, emotional stress, and actually preventing the improvement he was working so hard to achieve. (Sound familiar?)

The real transformation began when he started developing awareness of these self-critical patterns and learned to interrupt them over time, using the awareness techniques I teach, based on the Alexander Technique.

Instead of beating himself up over every mistake, he gradually began cultivating curiosity about his experience and developing a more constructive relationship with the learning process itself.

The result? Not only did his playing improve, but he started actually enjoying practice again.

Here's the thing – your awareness is more powerful than your willpower – and it's much easier to access!

And when you notice your perfectionist tendencies with compassion instead of judgment, you naturally create space for more effective and joyful engagement with your music.

This also connects to another crucial element we explored…

Quality of practice matters infinitely more than quantity.

So many of us get caught up in thinking “I need to practice for X hours today” (a concept many teachers impose on us from a young age, unfortunately, and which I call “practice malpractice”! 😉

And yes, even using timers can work against us! When we're watching the clock, we're focused on getting through time rather than being present with the music.

Instead of asking “How long should I practice?” try asking “How present can I be with my own experience of this phrase right now? Can I play this phrase and really BE myself, without trying to be different, trying to get something right, or pushing myself around?”

That shift into “Learner Mode” creates the ideal conditions where breakthroughs and musical growth can happen.

If this resonates with you and you'd like to explore further how conscious awareness can transform your musical experience, send me a message. I'd love to share more about what's possible! 💫

Jennifer
