CELEBRATING AOISE O’DWYER, VIOLA
Aoise is a professional violist who has recently gone back to school in Ireland for her Masters degree. She took one of my introductory Alexander Technique programs last year, and she is currently a member of The Musicians Advantage Advanced Group, learning how to apply The Art of Freedom® Method and Primal Alexander™ to her viola playing in highly specific ways.
In this video, she describes her recent experience performing on a recital towards her degree. I think you’ll enjoy her enthusiasm, which is contagious! 🙂
Aoise also gave me permission to share the following reminders she wrote out for herself, based on the idea of my “Freedom Directions” (which I teach in my introductory course and everywhere else). Her phrases are a beautiful way to prepare for a GREAT practice session or performance! I’m sure she’d be happy for you to “borrow” them! 🙂
“Hi everyone! I would like to share the “warm-up” I did before my Brahms Sonata rehearsal with piano today. It felt like a huge breakthrough, and I shed some tears while writing this in my journal:
I don’t have to do anything right now.
What is “warming up” anyway? What’s the point in warming up my muscles if I haven’t warmed up my heart and mind?
I am free to take my time and connect with myself and my body.
I am free not to play scales or arpeggios.
I am free to do etudes and journal.
I am free to walk into the rehearsal as myself.
I am free to feel nervous.
I am free to feel resistance.
I am free to not know what is going to happen.
I am free to make mistakes and ask for help.
I am free to be imperfect and still be treated with care and respect.
I am free to FEEL.
I am free to OPEN.
I am free to cry if I need to.
I am free to play out of tune.
My tendons are free to hurt and still receive my love and care.
My nerves are free to tingle and still receive my love and care.
My muscles are free to ache and still receive my love and care.
I am free to love myself just as I am.
I am free to believe that I am enough.
I am free to play Brahms as Aoise, not trying to be anybody else.
I am free to enjoy being myself with my viola.
My viola is free to be herself.
My pianist is free to be herself.
We are free to be ourselves together.
And the rehearsal was a BEAUTIFUL experience!”
