Ever catch yourself doing that last-second ‘adjustment' right before you start playing? You know the moment – when you suddenly check your posture, remind yourself about tone, or make one final positioning tweak? š¬
Most musicians believe that extra little check, that final adjustment, that last-second positioning is helping their performance. Of course! After all, we've all been taught that more preparation equals better results.
ā”ļø But here's what's actually happening under the surface: That “preparation” is actually a subtle loss of trust.
Your nervous system interprets your hesitation as “Wait – I'm not ready” and floods your body with tension that puts a brake on your natural ease and flow, sabotaging the good preparation you've done up to that point.
A real coaching breakthrough
In a recent session, one of my students had a breakthrough when he experienced this firsthand. He'd beautifully established ease and presence with his violin using the ‘Instrumental Compass' (a step-by-step process I teach for accessing flow before beginning to play).
Then, just as he was about to play, he started that familiar pattern of “checking” and “adjusting” – and immediately lost the flow state he'd created.
This pattern isn't unique to my students – it's nearly universal among musicians.
The moment we slowed it down and he recognized this pattern, everything shifted. Instead of more preparation, he decided to trust the process, let go of excess mental and physical tension, and simply begin.
The difference was extraordinary. The quality of his movements and the sound of his first notes projected a rich confidence and beautiful expression that wasnāt there before. āØ
What Trust Actually Looks Like
Letting go into flow isn't about being careless or unprepared. It's about understanding that once you've established ease and presence, any habitual adjusting, preparing, or “checking” actually creates the very problems you're trying to prevent.
The excess tension that results from trying to control your playing through extra preparation translates into a more constricted sound and less true control over your vibrato, dynamics, articulation, and expressiveness.
Your Key Question
As you explore this phenomenon, a key question to ask yourself is: “What's happening to me as I transition from preparation to playing?” š
When you notice that split-second of doubt, you can choose to return to ease instead of adding more tension. Trusting the process might look like a release softening your grip and allowing your first note to emerge naturally rather than forcing it into existence.
This applies to everything – not just music. Notice where in your life you're adding unnecessary “final checks” that actually undermine your confidence and flow.
Ready to Transform Your Playing?
Learning to make that shift from doubtful, over-controlling hesitation into trusting, easeful flow is what creates truly masterful artistry.
If you're ready to experience this transformation in your own playing, my private coaching studio is now open for new students this fall. Now's the time to get in touch!
Love & Light,
Jennifer
P.S. I work with all kinds of artists. Professional musicians of all instruments and styles are welcome, and amateurs are also welcome to apply. Send me a private message and we can chat about the possibilities for you! šµ
