Yesterday's masterclass for The Musician's Advantage membership was filled with those wonderful “aha” moments that make teaching so rewarding!
These weekly masterclasses bring together passionate musicians of all instruments and skill levels—from professionals to dedicated amateurs—creating a supportive community where we can all learn from each other, applying insights from The Art of Freedom® Method and touch-free Alexander Technique to our music.[Comment ‘CURIOUS' below if you want to know more about my upcoming summer program for pro string players!]
What makes these sessions special is their low-pressure atmosphere. There's no expectation of perfection, no judgment—just exploration of how our minds and bodies work together to find ease and enjoyment while improving our skills.
It's about discovering that sweet spot where effort and relaxation meet to create our best music with freedom and joy!
Our session began with a short centering exercise – simply being present and aware as “receivers” of information through all our senses. This practice of presence creates the foundation for everything we do.
First up was our violist, working on the third movement of the Hofmeister concerto. What struck me most was how his sound and presence have transformed over the last few months! There's a new resonance and playfulness that wasn't there before.
When tension appeared, I redirected his curiosity to the easing in his feet rather than his technique – and the change was immediate. His sound opened up beautifully! Sometimes the simplest shift in attention creates the most profound results.
Next, our saxophonist tackled a challenging passage for an upcoming big band performance. We explored how her belief that her “left hand is weak” was creating physical tension.
By applying my “Stained-Glass Practice” approach, we broke down complex fingering patterns into isolated movements with moments of ConstructiveThinking™ between each step. It's remarkable how small, focused adjustments can have a ripple effect through the entire system and make everything easier!
Our newest member, an excellent violinist from Singapore, joined us for the first time. Despite early-morning grogginess (it was 8 AM her time, like it was for our saxophone player from Australia!), she quickly relaxed and dove right in with courage.
We worked on reducing unnecessary pre-playing habits – like doing vibrato movements before she even needed them. A novel “vacation mindset” made a real difference in her playing – approaching the instrument from a place of ease rather than work.
Perhaps the most powerful moment came when I challenged her to list positive aspects of her playing. Like many classical musicians, she struggled to name more than a few good things. This highlighted our tendency to fixate on flaws rather than strengths. I've assigned her to list 50 positive things about her playing over the next few days – a true challenge!
This simple practice of noticing what's working well is transformative not just for music-making but for approaching life's challenges (even politics!!) with greater ease, patience, and presence.
I'm continually inspired by how these musicians are not just improving their playing but transforming their relationship with themselves and their art.
The “vacation mindset” we explored yesterday isn't about laziness – it's about approaching our instruments from a place of curiosity and freedom rather than striving and judgment.
What if we could all bring more of that spirit to everything we do?
