If you’re like most musicians, you probably believe need to improve your posture in order to relieve pain and play with better technique.
But as an Alexander Technique expert in movement and mind-body coordination (and a professional musician), I’m here to tell you: the problem isn’t your posture.
👉 The truth is: You do NOT need to fix your posture to heal pain or improve your playing.
I can almost hear you voicing your doubts—after all, most people (and many music educators) insist you need “good” posture to play well and stay pain-free.
But here's the truth about posture:
❌ There is no such thing as “good” posture. The body is designed to move, adapt, and change. Posture is static; the body is dynamic. And there is NOT a right posture or way to play your instrument beyond the way that is working for your unique system in any given moment, under any given circumstance.
❌ Nobody REALLY knows what “good” posture is! Even those with “perfect” posture can experience pain and get stuck with their technique. “Chin up – shoulders back” is just a superficial fix that may look good on the outside, but causes stiffness and blocks energetic flow on the inside.
❌ Trying to fix your posture by simply moving around your body parts increases tension and is not sustainable. In fact, trying to fix your posture by only addressing the physical parts of you leads to frustration, discomfort, and even pain, more often than not.
Let’s dig deeper.
How often have you heard these?
“Stand up straight!”
“Shoulders back!”
“Use your core muscles!”
…or even, “Relax!”
What happens when you try these quick fixes? Chances are, things feel better briefly – but before long, you find yourself slumping again because holding “good” posture is tiring. This back-and-forth cycle only adds to your pain.
What’s Really Happening
The problem isn’t “poor” posture—it’s the belief in “good” and “bad” posture and the partial, ineffective methods used to fix it.
While collapsing and slumping can contribute to tension and pain, forcing yourself into rigid shapes does the same.
A Better Way
Your body isn’t designed to be pushed around. It’s naturally organized, upright, and full of energy when you allow it to move freely. This freedom in your body is related to lightness, ease, and expressiveness in your emotions – and therefore in your music-making.
The key to breaking free from the posture trap is curiosity and whole-self integration, not judgment.
Start Here:
🌱 Notice when you judge or correct your posture. Instead of trying to fix yourself immediately, take a moment to NOT do that right away. Instead…
🌱 Get curious: What else is going on in your body? How are you feeling emotionally? Where is your attention and what are you thinking?
🌱 Are you interested in learning and growing, or are you fixated on getting things right?
🌱 Now… Instead of focusing on what seems wrong, get curious about what feels good and what is already working well.
What you focus on… you get more of!
This simple mindset shift is a powerful first step to transform your relationship with your whole self, ease pain, and improve your playing as you uncover the natural design that is made to be in fluid balance and flow.
