A student said this in a recent online coaching session… and something shifted immediately.

He had been working on a movement of unaccompanied Bach that carried a lot of history for him. Years of careful, effortful practice had left traces of tension in both his body and his thinking, so that even before he began, there was already a subtle sense of pressure.

Each note felt like something he had to micro-manage.

So instead of working on the piece itself, we became curious about what was happening to him as he played.

And at a certain moment, he said, almost to himself,
“I think I’m here to learn… not to perform.”

From there, the whole experience began to change.

His attention became a little more open.
There was less urgency around getting it right.
And without trying to fix anything directly, the sound started to deepen and he stopped rushing.

This is something I see very often.

When we approach our instrument as if we need to produce a result, our whole system tends to organize around that goal. The attention narrows, the body begins to work a little harder than necessary, and even small things can feel more significant than they are.

But when the intention shifts toward learning in a way that is open, curious and nonjudgmental, the experience becomes very different.

There is more space.
More creative ideas.
More room for new solutions to show up.
And interestingly, this often allows the playing itself to become more reliable, not less.
Not because we lowered the standard… but because we changed the conditions in which the playing is happening.
You might experiment with this in your own practice 🎻

Before you begin, simply take a moment to notice your overall intention… and gently ask yourself:

Am I here to perform… or to learn?

Then stay curious. Notice what changes—not just in the sound, but in your whole experience as you play.

I’d truly love to hear what you discover… feel free to share your experience in the comments or send me a message 💛

And if this resonates with you, I currently have 5 openings for my 5-week *Musician’s Mind-Body Breakthrough* program beginning in May.

This is where we go much deeper into what it actually means to be in this kind of “learning mode” in a practical, reliable way—working with the nervous system so it can settle, allowing your attention to become clearer and more spacious, and supporting a sense of ease both in your playing and in your everyday life.

It’s a very simple, sustainable process built around just 5–10 minutes a day of Awareness Etudes… but the shifts can be profound.

If you’re feeling drawn to explore this, you’re very welcome to reach out and get on my waitlist for details, and we can have a chat to see if it’s a good fit 🌿 Plus, I'm offering a HUGE early tuition discount for students who register this month!

Joyfully,
Jennifer
