As a musician, you probably are convinced that to play your instrument well, “good posture” is necessary. True, in a sense, because how you hold yourself absolutely does affect the way you hold your musical instrument, and therefore the quality of the sounds you produce.

When your body is stiff and your mind is not present, your sound will suffer. Your head, neck, back, hands, fingers, and other parts of your body will be either too tight or collapsed, and the lack of balanced muscle tone will affect your musical sound—negatively influencing your tone quality.

The excess tension will block your ability to pick up the feedback you need (through your sense of touch, hearing, sight) to make the appropriate adjustments in your musculature necessary to get the precise sounds you want. Because you’ll be relying on a compromised/blocked sensory feedback system, you will not be the best or most accurate judge of what you produce, you’ll be able to only approximate your wishes, and the effects are likely to be inconsistent.

When your mind is present and your body flexible and free to move, you will find yourself more sensitive to what is actually happening in the moment—both within your mind-body-self and externally—and you’ll be better equipped to be objective about the process and its results.

More often, you will start to notice how you are interfering with your technique and musicality by thinking thoughts that create unnecessary tension, and that increased sensitivity will give you abundant opportunities to stop and choose a new, better way to hold yourself and your instrument. Your enhanced ability to respond with sensitivity is 100 percent guaranteed to bring you closer to what you want, every time you do it!

With Love & Light,

Jennifer

P.S. Remember, the way you hold yourself is the way you hold your music. If you’re curious about how to free both, I’d be delighted to share how my coaching can support you. Just hit “reply” and let’s start the conversation!
