I remember working with a talented musician who was agonizing over whether to travel for a certain audition or whether to wait another year before potentially moving to another country.
She had looked at her situation from every angle she could think of, but felt more confused than ever.
Maybe you can relate – you're stuck on an important musical decision. Maybe it's choosing repertoire for an upcoming performance, deciding which gigs to take, or making a bigger career move.
You've been going in circles, analyzing every angle, making pros and cons lists, and asking everyone for their opinion. Yet somehow, you still feel paralyzed and no closer to a clear answer.
Since most of us have been trained to believe that the more we think about a decision, the better choice we'll make, you keep thinking.
And thinking.
And thinking some more.
But your mind – as brilliant as it is – wasn't designed to make every decision for you!
At some point, you may find that you're overthinking things.
When this happens, it's time to thank your mind for its valuable input, but inform it that now it's time for the mind to take a backseat so that you can listen to what other parts of you have to say.
Both indecisiveness and impulsive decision-making are symptoms of the same problem: they take us away from what we TRULY desire.
When we rely exclusively on our analytical mind or let ourselves be ruled by the “shoulds” that other people have implanted in us, we disconnect from our authentic self and our Inner Wisdom that is the true source of our creativity.
So how did my client get back in touch with her creative spirit?
During our session, we first did a few minutes of Primal Alexander Technique ‘Awareness Etudes' together to calm her nervous system and integrate her mind, body, and emotions.
Next, I guided her to get quiet, let go of any excessive mental chatter, and get in touch with her heart, her gut, her whole self.
I asked her: “What do you really want, with ALL of who you are? What maybe even feels scary, but also very right, deep down?”
The answer came quickly, beyond a doubt. Not from her head, but from her whole being. And suddenly, the path forward was crystal clear.
✨ From that moment on, she was deeply in flow with her creative spirit.
✨ She stopped second-guessing herself and felt more empowered in her musical decisions than ever before.
✨ The overthinking that had kept her stuck for months simply melted away when she learned to access her whole-self wisdom.
The next time you're facing a musical decision that has you spinning in circles, ask yourself: “Am I willing to take a little risk to do things differently? Am I open to letting myself be guided from my whole self instead of relying exclusively on my mind?”
When you're making a wholehearted, embodied decision with your whole self, and you're open to learning and growing and ENJOYING the process, you simply can't make a wrong choice.
Because whatever you choose in this way, you will learn from it.
And that is a really powerful kind of success.
I currently have a few openings in my private coaching studio for new students who are interested in getting back in touch with their creative spirit so they can dramatically improve their music-making and realize their creative dreams.
Just send me a private message if you'd like more information about how to work with me over the summer or next fall, either privately or in a group – or both!
With Love & Light,
Jennifer 🙂
P.S. I LOVE sharing this work! I look forward to hearing from you so we can discuss the possibilities for your musical life as you learn how to be more fully yourself and take decisive actions towards your true desires in a way that is beautifully aligned with your Creative Spirit!
