When your playing doesn’t feel good enough, the advice you usually hear is predictable:

If you’re struggling with performance anxiety…
– Practice more. Prepare harder. Perform more often.

If your technique is unreliable…
– Practice more. Push yourself. Concentrate harder.

If you feel disconnected from your music…
– Practice more. Feel it deeply. Pour your heart into it.

If you want better gigs…
– Practice more. Compete harder. Strive to succeed.

Yes, of course, practice matters.

But practicing more and working harder is NOT what will solve 99% of your performance problems.

The real source of these struggles is something far more fundamental, but it’s so obvious that it’s often overlooked (educators, take note!).

Here’s what I’ve learned over decades of being a musician working closely with musicians:

👉 Practice is important, but effective practice has far more to do with quality than quantity, and it MUST include awareness of how to integrate your whole self – not just focusing separately on your mind, your fingers, and the notes. Most musicians don’t actually know what makes practice work, so the results become a gamble, dependent on things like mood, energy levels, digestion, or even what’s happening in their personal lives.

✍️ What determines whether practice works is how you practice. And how you practice is shaped by how you think—and how those thoughts influence your body, your coordination, your emotions, and your movement. That means you need to get to know yourself better… so you can teach yourself better.

👌 The energetic quality of your mind-body relationship – the integrated flow of your whole self – directly determines whether your playing feels effortless and graceful, or tense and unreliable. Everything is connected.

👏 The most effective practice isn’t about obsessively fixing what’s “wrong.” It’s about connecting with the source of a musical idea and knowing how to translate it into sound with maximum efficiency and minimal interference – such as unhelpful thinking and unnecessary muscular tension.

So no – the answer isn’t simply to practice more.
The answer is to practice better – by including your whole self.

Practicing better means knowing how to:

✅ Practice efficiently so you learn faster with less effort
✅ Release tension, play pain-free, and prevent injury
✅ Identify the real root of a problem – and resolve it simply
✅ Be aware of what your mind-body-self is doing moment by moment
✅ Focus effectively instead of wasting energy on fear, self-criticism, or self-doubt
✅ Access effortless flow for expressive, confident, precise performances

When these elements are in place, you gain more conscious, constructive control and you can apply your whole self to quickly achieve what you’re aiming for.

🎯 You’ll know how to work with performance anxiety instead of fighting it.
🎯 Your technique becomes consistent and your expression uniquely beautiful.
🎯 You build a stable foundation for a career that’s fulfilling and aligned with your deeper purpose.

Who wouldn’t want that? 😍

If this resonates, and you’re curious how to improve without needing to practice more, I’d love to hear from you.
Just comment or message me and we’ll talk about what would be the best path forward for you.

Love & Light,
Jennifer ❤️
