The mind is rarely unified.
Some thoughts are encouraging and hopeful. Others are filled with doubt or fear. One part of you feels drawn toward the stage, while another imagines retreating as quickly as possible.
When contradictory desires arise — “I want to perform” alongside “I don’t want to perform” — the brain sends conflicting messages 🧠. The body, receiving these mixed instructions, attempts to respond in more than one direction at the same time. The result is often increased muscle tension, unsteadiness, or shaking.
This internal conflict can only be resolved when a clear decision is made — when you choose one direction of thought and deliberately guide your whole self to follow it. In doing so, opposing impulses lose their power, and the system begins to organize itself again.
If you are not accustomed to directing your thinking with consistency and clarity in daily life, attempting to take control of your thoughts in a high-pressure moment — such as just before a performance — is unlikely to succeed 🎭. Mental focus is not something that can be summoned at the last minute.
Beyond contributing to performance anxiety, a lack of mental control also slows learning. When the mind sends unclear or contradictory messages, the body cannot respond efficiently, and progress becomes compromised.
Clear thinking is essential in both practice and performance. You must be able to think one thought at a time, with speed and precision, in order to remain fully present with the notes as you are playing them 🎶. At the same time, you maintain awareness of what has just passed, what is coming next, and what is happening around you. This is not distraction — it is integrated awareness.
So how is this possible?
Concentration is commonly defined as the ability to focus attention on a single object. Every musician understands the importance of this skill. The ability to learn efficiently, perform confidently, and continue improving depends directly on it. In fact, the development of skill is proportional to the ability to concentrate 📚.
What is less commonly understood is that there are two fundamentally different ways to concentrate, and the choice between them has far-reaching consequences — not only for musical success, but for overall well-being and ease in performance.
