A professional violinist I coached recently shared a fear she’d been embarrassed to mention for a long time.

She plays regularly in a trio, and something in one colleague’s playing consistently frustrated her. What troubled her most, though, was the fear that she might begin absorbing the same habits—and that her own playing could gradually become smaller, less free, or less alive.

This fear is more common among highly sensitive musicians than most people realize. When you rehearse and perform closely with the same people, you register far more than their notes, mistakes, or intonation. You also feel their tension, uncertainty, intensity, and reactions when something goes wrong. When you care deeply about the quality of your work, it can begin to feel as though you need to protect your playing from everything around you.

But this isn’t fundamentally a technical problem, and it can’t be solved by practicing harder, analyzing your colleague more carefully, shutting yourself off emotionally, or trying to change them.

At heart, this is a relationship issue: learning how to remain connected to your own body, musical intention, feelings, and creative responsiveness while staying open to the other musicians around you. That also makes it an essential performance skill.

Inside The Musician’s Advantage™, my six-month private coaching program for professional musicians, we begin by strengthening your ability to recognize what is happening within your whole system and how you’re responding to the world around you—first in everyday life, and then at your instrument, in rehearsal, and in performance.

Through the daily application of The Art of Freedom® Method and Primal Alexander™ Awareness Etudes, you learn to notice frustration, tension, comparison, or emotional discomfort without becoming organized around it.

Instead of hardening against another musician, losing yourself in the emotional atmosphere of the ensemble, or carrying the rehearsal home with you, you develop the ability to return to your own center and remain connected to the music you want to create.

This doesn’t mean becoming detached or unaffected. Your sensitivity is part of what allows you to listen deeply, respond intuitively, adjust in the moment, and participate in the subtle give-and-take that brings music to life.

The goal isn’t to feel less. It is to become freer in relationship to what you feel, so that another person’s habits no longer determine the quality of your experience—or narrow your access to the musician you already are.

Over our six months together, this becomes a practical, lived way of working. Through personalized private coaching, daily awareness practice, comprehensive course materials, ongoing email support, and live Masterclasses and group sessions, you learn how to apply these principles within the real situations you’re facing, rather than merely understanding them as interesting ideas.

You become better able to enter rehearsals with clarity, remain present when a colleague frustrates you, recover more quickly when something pulls you off center, and leave without carrying everyone else’s tension in your body.

You learn to collaborate without abandoning yourself, remain sensitive without becoming overwhelmed, and preserve what is most precious in your artistry without building walls around it.

Because these are relationship patterns rather than purely musical ones, the changes rarely remain inside the rehearsal room.
As you become less reactive, less defended, and more able to return to yourself, you may also notice greater ease in your teaching, your closest relationships, and the way you respond to pressure throughout your daily life.

I currently have two openings for professional musicians ready to begin private coaching in August.

If you’re tired of absorbing the atmosphere around you, trying to change the people you perform with, or worrying that another musician’s habits are beginning to affect your own, I invite you to reach out to me so we can have a conversation.

We’ll explore what may be happening beneath the surface and whether The Musician’s Advantage™ coaching is the right next step for helping you remain fully yourself—in your relationships, your rehearsals, and your music.

I look forward to connecting with you to explore what’s possible for you!
