It seems to me that science, as wonderful and practically useful as it can be, must be recognized as consisting of theories that are only relative, not absolute.
Just because there isn’t a scientific/logical explanation for something today, doesn’t mean one doesn’t already exist today that simply hasn’t been discovered yet.
And just because there seems to be scientific/logical proof of something today, that doesn’t mean the proof is absolute and won’t be disproven in the future.
History has shown us examples of these things again and again.
I prefer not to put my absolute faith in something relative, even as I very much appreciate its practical usefulness as I go about my day with relative ease and more or less mindful awareness, with things working more or less well.
What seems to be quite essential to increase my ease, wellbeing, and happiness, however, is that I become more frequently mindful and aware that what I think is true might actually not be.
Things start going in a better overall direction as soon as I discern between the potentially relative and the potentially absolute, choosing to let go of the former in favor of that latter – something infinitely greater which may be absolutely true and knowable by some part of me that goes beyond my senses and scientific logic.
I agree with Albert Einstein when he says, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution”. Also: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview to life's coming attractions.”
Without imagination, it would be hard – maybe even impossible – to consciously improve at all.
My small, personal mind/limited ego doesn’t know the answers to the never-ending questions we all come up with, but I do have a greater sense of freedom, ease, and relief when I let go of my need to know and I open up my imagination to All-Possibility.
Using my creativity in this way allows me to tap into a deeper, broader, more spacious and universal sense of knowing – a beautiful sense of being that rings true in the depths of my heart and lights up my whole self. That’s good enough for me!
So for now, I’m just doing my best to be here and notice what I notice, aim towards what I imagine to be true and helpful from moment to moment, let go of the idea that I – or anyone else – must be right or wrong, and practice happiness as often as possible.
To me, this is essentially what life is all about. Practicing the Alexander Technique helps me keep making these things my top priority and makes it easier to put them into practice, so I don’t get stuck in thinking about abstract ideas that don’t have anything to do with everyday life.
Instead, the Technique (which is at its core the primary practice of inhibition-direction that I’ve described throughout this piece), allows me to embody them ideas more easily and more fully over time.
This is why I don’t spend much time on scientific arguments or explanations, or even detailed conversations about anatomy. To me, these are mostly a distraction from what I consider as more essential, efficient, and immediately useful.
Personally, I find it much more interesting and valuable to pay attention with detached curiosity to what’s happening to me right now as I’m experiencing life in this human form, alive in this beautiful mysterious world. I don’t really need to understand much of it – but I do need to live it.
Nothing is more awe-inspiring to me than the contemplation of Nature and the Great Mystery that is unfolding right here right now… the Cause that includes all effects (like the seed that includes the tree), which includes everything that is scientific and non-scientific; logical and the illogical; real and the illusory.
May all beings be happy!
