Dear Music-Lovers,
I’d really love your feedback on this one.
What would you think of a performance in which….
– The performer were totally in touch with her (his) own emotions,
– allowing herself to feel them deeply,
– allowing herself to express them fully,
– allowing herself to feel and face all of her fear with courageous bravery, with guts enough to expose her own tortured or elated soul in all its misery and glory,
– with the sole purpose of transmuting those emotions into Peace…
– she is moved by her own experience of the music and her own soul,
– she portrays all of it through her own unique rendition of the piece, either pre-composed by someone else or improvised by herself…
– she moves her audience, compelling them to touch areas hidden deep inside of themselves, waking up feelings that are anything from terrifyingly uncomfortable to awesomely blissful…
– she brings them along on her journey, which becomes theirs alongside hers…
– and she carries them along with her in order to uplift their spirits and hers, because in the end, there is always a sense of completion and a remembrance of hope and Peace….
What would you think of that?? Have you ever experienced a performance like this before?
Just wondering……………… I’m eager to read your comments…. I really want to know what you think.

I think that the performer may go into a deep depression and could pass out on stage…she or h should be very very careful.
Also, I think that the performer may never be able correctly again.
It’s a deep chance to take. Music has to be in torture?
Music should be to our highest and even to lowest, but not to the point of self destruction…which could easily happen.

I think what you’re saying is true – the artist runs a real risk to allow herself to feel this deeply. But….
I think it’s THE most desirable thing when it’s done within the context that I’ve described: “with the sole purpose of transmuting those emotions into Peace…” and “she carries them along with her in order to uplift their spirits and hers, because in the end, there is always a sense of completion and a remembrance of hope and Peace….”
In this context, there can be true healing and renewal – the complete opposite of self-destruction.
This kind of performance requires a great deal of consciousness, self-awareness, clarity of intention, and skillfulness. I believe it is very rare.
Far more artists self-destruct in the way you’ve described because they lack these things – especially the skills to carry it out. And I’m not talking about musical/technical skills here. I’m talking about life skills, especially the ability to have “constructive, conscious control” over the whole self (F.M. Alexander’s words), which includes the mind, body, and everything else that we are.
