Take a moment to ask yourself the following questions:

Do you generally hold and honor yourself with softness, flexibility, and ease? With loving-kindness and compassion? Or—filled with stiffness and fear—do you hold yourself up to rigorous scrutiny and judgment?

Do you try to “pull yourself together,” “get a grip on yourself,” or try not to “lose your head” when things go wrong? Or can you let yourself feel, “fall apart,” and “lose it” when the going gets tough?

Do you hold yourself accountable for your thoughts and actions? Or do you neglect the self-holding and hand over your autonomy, letting circumstances have a “stronghold” on you, letting others dictate how you think and behave?

How does the whole self (mind? body? emotions?) respond to the way we hold ourselves? Does our holding allow us to expand with loving ease? Or do we react by compressing ourselves? Do we open up in generosity of spirit? Or do we shut down in fear?

As living, changing, thinking beings in constant motion, we need to pay attention to how we treat ourselves, and observe how we respond to our self-treatment. Posture improves naturally when we pay attention to the quality of our self-holding.

People often assume that the Alexander Technique is about improving posture and physical alignment. Even though this isn’t at all true, it makes sense that people perceive the Technique in this way because improved posture is a common beneficial side effect. Also, our body posture and alignment are visible and obvious, whereas this is not always the case with the whole-person effects of the Technique, such as improved mood, less reactivity, or better relationships. They are visible but not necessarily traced back to the Technique as source.

The Art of Freedom Method teaches the Alexander Technique in a way that is all-encompassing, explicitly promoting authenticity of being—the opposite of posturing or pretending to be somebody you’re not.

Love & Light,
Jennifer
