The combined application of inhibition and direction to our Primary Instrument (the Self) while making music is what allows us to access effortless ease and enjoy real artistic mastery. 🎻
In the Alexander Technique, inhibition and direction go hand in hand—you can’t have one without the other. To keep things simple, I normally just use the word “inhibition” to indicate that both inhibition and direction are happening simultaneously.
Through the “non-doing” volitional act of inhibition, you let go of excess overall tension and a global, expansive easing up and out (aka direction) happens naturally. You can’t “DO” direction—you ALLOW it. You could even say that direction “does itself.” 🌿
To inhibit consciously, you need the intention—i.e., to give yourself the direction—to inhibit. In Primal Alexander, we do this by employing ConstructiveThinking, with or without words.
When you do your ConstructiveThinking, you watch in wonder as the ease begins to flow more freely, allowing the natural ebb and flow of healthy expansion-contraction to occur throughout your system. Sometimes it’s a very subtle movement that you may not notice at all, but it always happens because we are designed this way. This is the natural flow that allows inspired artistry to happen through you. 🌊
I'd love to hear about your experience, if you'd like to share!
With Love & Light,
Jennifer ❤️
