A professional musician I was coaching recently shared an observation that beautifully illustrates what can happen when we stop fighting ourselves. 🎵

He had just come back from a concert, and instead of talking about how he'd played, he told me what he had noticed from the stage.

“I looked out at the audience,” he said, “and I saw all these joyful faces looking back at me.” 😊

It was such a simple observation, but it immediately caught my attention because it revealed a profound shift in the way he was experiencing performance.

Not long before that, we'd been talking about how easy it is to become preoccupied with trying to get everything right. Like so many musicians, he'd spent years overthinking and feeling responsible for making the performance happen—for producing something worthy, proving himself, and playing as perfectly as possible.

When your attention is consumed by trying to control every note, there's very little room left to notice everything that's already going well.

“But this time, something had shifted.

Instead of being absorbed in what he was doing, he found himself receiving the good energy that was already there. He wasn't just playing *for* the audience. He was allowing himself to experience being *with* them.

Later in our session, I guided him through a visualization exercise. I invited him to imagine seeing himself from a comfortable observing distance as he walked into a room filled with people who were genuinely happy to see him.

As he stayed with that image, something softened.

Then I asked him to imagine walking into that same room without needing to earn anyone's approval. Without needing to prove his worth. Simply allowing himself to receive the warmth that was already waiting for him. 💛

His whole presence changed.

This is one of the things I love most about this work.

When we begin to let go of the habit of trying to control every outcome, something unexpected becomes possible. We discover that we don't always have to manufacture confidence through effort.

Sometimes the support, warmth, appreciation, and connection we're longing for have been there all along—we've simply been too busy trying to prove ourselves to receive them.
Sometimes the most important shift isn't becoming a better musician.

It's becoming someone who can walk into the room with enough freedom to receive what's already there.

And from that place, making beautiful music becomes a natural expression of who you are. 🌿

If this resonates with you—if you've ever felt like you can't quite be yourself on stage, in auditions, or under pressure—I would love to help. 💚

This is exactly what we explore together in private coaching. We work with the habits—physical, mental, and emotional—that create tension, self-doubt, and overthinking, so you can trust yourself more deeply, perform with greater ease and confidence, and rediscover the joy that first drew you to music.

I have one opening left this July for a new private coaching student. If it feels like the right time to experience this kind of transformation for yourself, send me a message or comment below. I'd love to hear your story.
