Most professional musicians are taught that better playing requires more concentration.

Tighter focus. Stronger mental control. Greater effort.

But what if the way we’ve learned to concentrate is actually working against us?

During a recent masterclass, a musician shared a moment of realization that stopped the room:

“I didn’t mean to condemn concentration itself… it was the *way* I was doing it.”

That distinction is everything.

Like many highly trained musicians, he had learned to concentrate by force — narrowing his attention, pushing mentally, trying hard to “stay focused.” From the outside, it looked disciplined. Inside, it felt effortful, and he knew that was getting in his way.

As we explored this together, something shifted.

This time, others watching described a very different quality of concentration:

• a flow state
• communication without strain
• the music playing itself, rather than being forced

And that’s the distinction most musicians are never taught:

There is a kind of focus that creates tension…
and a kind that creates clarity, musical depth, and ease.

When he stopped trying to concentrate and instead became curious, asking himself with healthy, open detachment, “What’s happening to me as I'm playing right now?” everything changed.

No forcing.
No fixing.
Just presence.

It raises an interesting question:
What becomes possible when curiosity and presence are prioritized, letting awareness lead instead of effort? 🌿

Try it out, and let me know what happens!
