A student recently said something revealing during her coaching session:
“I keep wanting to look at the clock when I'm practicing. I'm literally addicted to the clock! And then I realize I'm going into autopilot during practiceโalthough I don't beat myself up for it anymore.”
This breakthrough reveals something profound about why so many accomplished musicians struggle with chronic tension, pain, performance anxiety, and technical plateausโand it has nothing to do with your talent or work ethic.
Here's the misconception that may be keeping you stuck, too:
We think discipline means following rigid practice systems, timing ourselves, and pushing through discomfort or exhaustion. But this approach actually trains us to disconnect from our inner wisdom and perform on autopilotโwithout joy, especially when it matters most.
๐ฏ The real culprit hiding in plain sight: The word โshould.โ
Listen to how it shows up:
โข โI should practice more hoursโ
โข โI should have nailed that auditionโ
โข โI should be able to play this passage by nowโ
โข โI should feel more confident on stageโ
โข โI should follow my teacherโs method exactlyโ
Every โshouldโ creates internal pressure that activates your nervous systemโs stress response.
Your body tenses, preparing for a task it believes is dangerous.
You lose connection with curiosity, creativity, and joyโthe very qualities that allow you to access flow state and perform at your peak.
What actually needs to happen: You need to recognize that โshouldโ is a choice killer!
When you operate from โshould,โ youโre training yourself to be a technician who plays on autopilot. But thatโs not what masterful artistry isโmasterful artistry is spontaneous, conscious creation in the moment.
And itโs certainly not going to help you win auditions, play with freedom, or share your music from the heart.
This is exactly what we work on together in The Musicianโs Advantageโข coaching program.
Through The Art of Freedomยฎ Method with touch-free Alexander Technique, my clients learn to replace the tyranny of โshouldโ with conscious awareness and genuine curiosity. They discover how to make choices that support their natural coordination instead of fighting against it.
Hereโs what happened for this student:
When she removed the clock from her practice space and stopped timing herself, something magical occurred.
โTime just passed faster. Instead of playing 30 minutes, sometimes it was 40, and I wasnโt pushing.โ
โจ And the amazing thing is that her severe chronic pain was totally ABSENT throughout that entire practice session.
Not from pushing through the pain or making technical compromises, and not from fixing her posture, doing more stretches, or mapping her anatomy correctly…
Her freedom from pain came from releasing the internal pressure that was creating tension throughout her whole system.
She discovered what happens when you practice from curiosity instead of external pressure: your natural coordination emerges.
Your body relaxes because itโs not fighting imposed requirements. Your technique improves not from forcingโbut from allowing.
In my courses, you learn:
โข How to catch the subtle โshouldsโ that create tension throughout your whole system
โข The highly specific ConstructiveThinkingโข practices that replace pressure with effortless presence
โข How to access your inner wisdom so you always know exactly what you need to work on
โข The difference between practicing for improvement and practicing for whole-self mastery and integration
โข How to create the conditions where your natural musicality, creative spirit, and technical freedom can emerge
My clients discover that the most efficient, joyful practiceโand the most confident, expressive performanceโhappens when they stop fighting themselves and start supporting themselves.
This transformation doesnโt happen overnight.
It requires the right expert guidance, a proven process, and consistent practice over time. Thatโs why The Musicianโs Advantage premium coaching program is a comprehensive six-month private experience that takes you through all three core stages of development:
๐ฑ Stage 1: Ease of Self โ Learn a simple daily practice to instantly calm your mind, relax your body, and bring more balance, ease, and confidence to your music and everyday life.
๐ต Stage 2: Musical Integration โ Bring your whole, relaxed self to your instrument so you can play with effortless ease, share your music with confidence, and consistently love the sound you make.
๐ญ Stage 3: Artistic Transformation โ Dramatically improve your technical skills and creative artistry with cutting-edge practice and performance strategies that allow you to access flow state for maximum ease and freedom of expression.
With six months together, we have plenty of time to dig deep and make fundamental changes with ease and without struggle.
This isnโt about working harderโitโs about learning to work in harmony with your natural design.
๐ซ I currently have 2 openings available starting in August for musicians who are ready to finally experience the freedom, ease, and joy theyโve been working so hard to achieve for many years.
If youโre tired of โshould-ingโ yourself into tension and ready to discover whatโs possible when you work with your natural design instead of against it, just send me a message and we can have a chat to explore whether this program is right for you.
This is your invitation to stop letting habitual patterns dictate your playingโwhere youโre so focused on getting it โrightโ that you lose connection with the music itself, or where years of ingrained tension override your natural musicality and expressive freedom.
Instead, youโll learn to make music with your whole, integrated selfโfully present, deeply connected, and expressing from authentic creativity rather than conditioned responses.
This is the way youโve always known was possible.
Joyfully,
Jennifer โค
