Today, we're celebrating Sarah Herbert, Assistant Professor of Trumpet and Jazz at Western Kentucky University! š
“My work with Jennifer and the Alexander Technique, without a doubt, saved my career in music.”
Hereās Sarahās amazing experience (see her picture below):
“I discovered Jennifer at a critical time in my life when I was about to allow a bad performance experience convince me that I should reconsider a career in music.
It was devastating and emotionally traumatic and although many people could sympathize, no one knew how to help me. However, when I showed up for my first Art of FreedomĀ® class with Jennifer, I breathed a sigh of relief because, for the first time I started to believe there was hope for me.
This hope was apparent as soon as everyone in the Art of Freedom group introduced themselves and talked about why they were there. I quickly realized that I was not the only one struggling with performance anxiety, among many other things as well.
There is nothing more empowering than to realize that you are not alone.
The instant camaraderie that is created in the class provides such a positive environment in which to learn Alexander Technique. It is much easier to work on feeling āfreeā, as the technique teaches us, when there is a support system there as well.
This brings me to one of my favorite things about the Art of Freedom classes, Jenniferās āFreedom Directionsā [or “3 Magic Phrases”]. These are just three simple phrases that, since the first time I heard them, have changed the way I think and approach anxiety inducing situations.
My favorite of the three is the phrase, āI donāt have to do anythingā, because my body reacts so strongly to thinking that idea. As soon as I think it, I feel a release of tension everywhere. It has taught me how truly powerful the mind is and how it can impact the body more than I ever imagined.
As an aspiring professional musician, educator, artist, and stressed out graduate student, I can truly attest to the inspirational influence that the Art of Freedom has provided for me.
It has created a new path to follow that has led me to rediscover my passion for music, overcome performance anxiety and reclaim strength in myself that has made me a better person and a better musician.”
Thank you, Sarah, for sharing your experience with us! ā¤ļø
