“I keep going into autopilot during practice.”

“I’ll be doing rhythmic exercises and suddenly think, ‘Wait—which rhythm did I just play? Which one am I on?’”

A musician I was coaching shared this recently. Of course, the problem wasn’t the rhythmic exercise itself. Rhythmic variations, slow practice, repetition, metronome work, visualization, and other structured methods can all be extremely useful.

The difficulty begins when the method becomes a task to complete rather than a tool you are consciously using.🎵

Your hands keep moving, but your attention is no longer fully engaged. You repeat the rhythm because it comes next on the list without remaining clear about what you are listening for or why you are repeating it.

At that point, even an excellent practice method can stop helping.

For professional musicians, this matters enormously. When you have limited practice time, a full rehearsal and performance schedule, teaching responsibilities, and a mountain of repertoire to prepare, you simply don’t have time to spend twenty minutes repeating something without knowing whether it is producing the result you need.

Mindless repetition doesn’t merely waste time; it can reinforce the very coordination, thinking, or musical habits you are trying to change.

A method can give your practice structure, but it cannot notice when you are gripping, rushing, forcing, losing concentration, or repeating something that has already served its purpose.

That requires heightened awareness.

In our session, I invited this musician to pause and ask herself:

– What am I trying to improve right now?
– What am I noticing as I play?
– Is this rhythm helping me hear, feel, or coordinate something more clearly?
– Do I want to repeat it—or has it already given me what I needed?

Those questions brought her back into an active relationship with the music. Instead of mechanically completing an exercise, she could use it as an interesting learning experiment to speed up her progress.

This is one of the central distinctions within The Art of Freedom® Method. The goal is not to abandon structure, discipline, or effective practice strategies. It is to remain present and responsive enough to use each method purposefully rather than slipping into autopilot.

Through The Art of Freedom® Method, musicians learn to integrate five essential dimensions of themselves:

Purpose: Clarifying what you genuinely want.
Mind: Using ConstructiveThinking™ to recognize habitual reactions and restore conscious choice.
Body: Noticing unnecessary effort and allowing more natural coordination.
Spirit: Remaining receptive to curiosity, intuition, and inspiration.
Artistry: Applying effective practice methods in ways that support your individual technique and musical vision.

When these elements work together, you no longer have to choose between precise structure and spontaneous freedom. You can use rhythmic variations, metronome work, technical exercises, and detailed problem-solving strategies while remaining attentive to what is actually happening – and thoroughly enjoy the process while getting the best results.

This is exactly the kind of transformation we explore in my private coaching programs.

At the heart of our work together is personalized private coaching, where we work directly with your habits, repertoire, professional demands, challenges, and artistic goals. You receive individualized guidance in applying The Art of Freedom® Method in practice and touch-free Primal Alexander™ Technique to rehearsals, teaching, auditions, performances, and everyday life.

You’ll also have the support of an amazing international community of thoughtful, dedicated musicians who understand the demands and possibilities of a life in music. Through live masterclasses, group activities, and community discussion, you’ll learn from other musicians’ questions and discoveries while being supported in your own growth.

Our community also includes a powerful Virtual Stage: a supportive space where students can practice being seen and heard, experiment with new ways of performing, and develop more relaxed confidence in front of others.🎻

Alongside the private coaching and community support, the program includes a comprehensive self-study component:

• Lifetime access to The Art of Freedom® Foundations Level 1 course, where you develop the essential awareness and mind-body skills that support everything else.

• Access to the Level 2 Skills Accelerator, where you apply those principles more deeply to your instrument, practice, and performance.

• Access to the Level 3 Advanced Practice Methods course, where we explore sophisticated practice and problem-solving approaches that support technical and artistic growth without sacrificing freedom, presence, or ease. Educators especially love this course because so much of the material can enrich their work with students.

Over time, you become better able to recognize which methods will help, when to use them, and when it is time to change direction. This is especially valuable when you need to learn a large amount of repertoire efficiently, because your repetitions become purposeful rather than automatic, and your attention stays connected to the specific result you need.

You also learn how to notice when you have slipped into autopilot without turning that realization into another reason to criticize yourself. Instead, you can return to Learner Mode and choose the next step because it is useful—not simply because it appears next on a practice chart.

You don’t need to choose between creative freedom and excellent practice methods.
You just need the holistic awareness and the dedication to bring them into balancer.

If you’re ready to make better use of your limited practice time and develop a more conscious, efficient, and creatively responsive relationship with your practice, reach out to me to inquire about private coaching to learn The Art of Freedom® Method with me.

Love & Light,
Jennifer

P.S. I have two openings for students ready to begin in August. Are you ready to dive in? There's no time like the present! 🙂
